A quiet journal

book frontbook openbook spine

This journal is made with soft, yellowish Hahnemuhle Bugra paper, craquelle coloured reindeer leather and natural flax thread. Also the closure follows the same natural flax theme, with a coconut button as embellishment. The covers are lined with creamy white handmade paper. The endpapers are made with the lining paper, laminated with Mingeishi paper in the natural flax hue.

These are large – 29 x 22cm or 11 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches – journals/sketchbooks with flexible leather covers. The books are bound on leather thongs, which slot through the limp leather cover, and are glued down and, in the case of two books, also stitched through the cover.

The books have the same vintage endpapers.

Pages are of an artist quality drawing paper in a light caramel color (light yellow-brown).

Further detailing: edges of covers have a gold/silver coloured lining, and the books have leather endbands.

These books would be a perfect artist’s/designer’s working journal or as an outdoors notebook.

This little notebook is created with white silk, beaded lace and romantic details.

Inside the covers are two pockets one can tuck inspiration images and  important notes into.

Height 14cm / 5.5 inches (including lace)
Width 16.5cm/ 6.5 inches

White book

This drawing book has evolved over the last 6 month to its current form. It is large, has 46 leaves of high quality drawing paper (160gms) and opens flat. The covers are constructed of watercolour paper, so one can go on and extend the creative vibe outside the book as well. It’s relatively light weight, so it makes a perfect travel companion. Sharpen your pencils!

A journal for Yoko

In April 2005 I made this journal for my Japanese friend Yoko. She in turn sent me some wonderful calligraphy for my then new home. I don’t have the measurements of this journal anymore, but I estimate it to be around the same size as the red reindeer journal.

I also personalized the journal with some text. It reads

YOKOS BOOK

So far so close
soul meets soul
reaching over time and space
touching the heartfelt cords within
filling me with music

Red reindeer journal

A commissioned reindeer journal is now on its way to its new home…

210 x 140mm

It is bound in flexible, hand dyed reindeer leather, lined with hand dyed pastepaper. It is long stitch bound, and has a closure that I found fitting to its overall character.

The paper for the pages is acid free, soft paper with a yellowish cream colour and very short brown fibers in it.

Candy Cells & Days Go By

These are two little notebooks I made during my studies at the Tallinn Arts Academy in Estonia.

Candy Cells is bound in calf leather, which I batik dyed prior to covering. It has black endpapers of Ingres paper, and handmade endbands of coated Ingres.
80 x 60 mm

Days go by is bound in pigskin, with a burnt, linear pattern across its covers. Endpapers are made with a cream coloured Ingres paper, endbands are of dark brown leather.

Guestbook for a wedding

This book was commissioned as a wedding gift – it was the reception guest book at a wedding. It is a Coptic binding with padded silk covers. The spines of the sections are lined with fragments of heart-patterned papers, keeping in the colour-theme of the wedding. Ribbon closures. Multi-coloured endpapers. The book is housed in a lined silk pouch with matching tassels.

Logbook for an adventurer

Limp leather binding for the ease of handling, paste paper linings for the looks, handmade endbands in matching colours, and the closing strap with a Chinese coin for good fortune. A personal birthday present.

Little Brother

I made this long-stitch binding in dark brown suede as a present. The endpapers made of a printed map (reproduction of a manuscript). Sewn with Finnish hand-spun linen thread. The closure is made of the same Finnish linen, ending with beads of bone, wood and shell.
This book fits snugly in the hand, and its soft materials and flexible binding add to the warmth…I just wanted to stroke the book like a little animal!
