At last photos of this book I’m secretly so proud of. Measuring 16cm in height and 50cm in width. It has birch bark covers and mixed media pages, own text based on the romantic history of “us” from beginning to now. The binding structure is based on palm leaf books.

Mare

Mare is a meditation book. It is a silent story about rhythm, abrasion and unconditional love. It is my statement on motherhood – the rhythm of days, the abrasion of life that is smoothing out some edges, and endless giving out of the loving heart.

Bestiary

The slowly moving nomad I am, I decided to make a manuscript book of “the things I’ve seen”. So it became “Simperi’s Bestiary”. Giants, elves and trolls are in it, but also some typically Finnish spirits. Hand written and drawn manuscript book on acid free rag paper. Bound in patinated leather. Housed in a pouch of fish leather, closure red leather twine, bone beads.

The Skin of Stones

“Could one make a book with stones?” was a question fired at me in a workshop. “Yes.” I replied, you can make a book out of almost anything. But what would it look like? So I explored the matter… and this is the result.

The Skin of Stones is a feel-book. It weighs more than you would think, it’s all bulky and awkward, but beautiful. It is an artist’s book about the silent life of stones and hidden things.

Patience

The complete name of this book is “Patience = sitting with courage” , inspired by a word-play of my Danish friend Sita. She pointed out that in Swedish, the word tålamod (patience) is composed of the words tåla (endure) and mod (courage), resulting in enduring with courage. This helped me through another fit of impatience.

Back to the description of this particular book:
The collaged pages are based on deep blue Mingeishi paper, with collages of painted Asiatic paper, feathers, gold-and silvercoloured metallic papers, details that have been stitched on, invented writing in gouache and a pressed rose petal.
The covers have four layers of material on them, the last being a gold-coloured silk-crepe. The spine is covered with red Mingeishi, and a piece of gold lace runs on both covers along the spine.
